Electric Tricycle Starting Issues: Shudder & Jerkiness

Shuddering or jerking during startup usually indicates a problem with power delivery from the controller to the motor, often linked to sensor feedback or phase connection issues.
1.Common Causes
Faulty Hall Sensor:This is the most frequent cause. The controller relies on Hall sensors inside the motor to know when to switch power. If one sensor fails or gives an intermittent signal, the controller loses synchronization, causing the motor to stutter or shake violently when starting from a stop.
Poor Phase Wire Connection:Loose, corroded,or broken connectors on the three thick motor phase wires cause intermittent power delivery. One phase may drop out, making the motor run roughly or not start at all.
Controller Issue:Blown MOSFETs in the controller's output stage can mean one of the three phases isn't receiving power, leading to a jerky start.
Loose Motor Magnets:A magnet coming unglued inside the motor can physically catch on the stator as it tries to rotate, causing a violent shudder.
Throttle Signal Noise:A dirty or failing throttle can send a jumpy voltage signal to the controller, making power delivery uneven.
2.Diagnostic Steps
Check Phase Wires:Inspect the three thick motor wires and their connectors.Look for burns, melting,or looseness.Disconnect and reconnect them firmly.
Hall Sensor Test:
Locate the thin hall sensor connector.
With power on,probe the three signal wires(usually yellow, green, blue)using a multimeter(black lead on ground).
Manually rotate the rear wheel slowly.
Each wire should pulse cleanly between 0V and 5V.If a wire stays at 0V or 5V without changing, that hall sensor is faulty.
Controller MOSFET Test:
With power off and phase wires disconnected, set multimeter to diode test mode.
Check for shorts between battery positive and each phase, and battery negative and each phase.Any short circuit indicates a blown MOSFET.
Throttle Test:Probe the throttle signal wire.Twist the grip slowly. The voltage should rise smoothly without any sudden jumps or dropouts.
3.Common Fixes
Replace Hall Sensors:If a sensor is faulty, the motor must be opened.Note the sensor type(usually SS41 or equivalent).Desolder the old one and solder the new one in the exact same position.Secure with epoxy.
Replace Phase Connectors:If connectors are burnt or loose, cut them off and solder the wires directly,or install new high-current bullet connectors.
Replace Controller:If MOSFETs are blown, replacing the entire controller is often simpler than repairing it.
Reglue Magnets:If a magnet is loose,open the motor,clean the surface,and reattach using high-strength epoxy.
