Electric Tricycle Brake Issues: Spongy, Weak, or Pulling

Brake problems usually fall into three categories:loss of hydraulic pressure, mechanical misalignment,or worn parts.
1.Spongy or Soft Brake Lever(Low Stopping Power)
Cause:Air in the hydraulic line(for hydraulic brakes)or stretched cable(for mechanical brakes).Low brake fluid.
Fix(Hydraulic):Bleed the brake system.Open the bleed screw on the caliper, pump the lever, and allow old fluid/air bubbles to escape while refilling the master cylinder with fresh DOT fluid or mineral oil(as specified).Close the screw before releasing the lever.
Fix(Mechanical):Tighten the cable tension using the barrel adjuster on the lever or caliper. If the cable is frayed or stretched too far, replace the inner cable.
2.Brake Pulls to One Side When Stopping
Cause:Unequal braking force on the left and right wheels. This is often a stuck piston in a caliper or a loose mounting bracket.
Fix:Check that both rear brake calipers(if dual rear brakes)are actuating simultaneously.Lubricate stuck caliper pivot points. For hydraulic brakes,a seized piston may require caliper rebuild or replacement.Ensure the trike axle is properly aligned;a bent axle can also cause pulling.
3.Grinding Noise and Poor Performance
Cause:Brake pads are completely worn down to the metal backing plate.Metal is now grinding against the metal rotor or drum.
Fix:Immediately replace brake pads. For disc brakes, inspect the rotor for deep scoring. If the rotor is damaged or worn below minimum thickness, replace it as well. For drum brakes, inspect the drum surface for grooves.
4.Brake Drag(Wheel Does Not Spin Freely)
Cause:Caliper not centering correctly,or cable too tight, keeping slight pressure on the pads even when lever is released.
Fix:Loosen the caliper mounting bolts, squeeze the brake lever firmly, and while holding it,retighten the bolts. This self-centers the caliper on the rotor. For mechanical brakes, reduce cable tension slightly.
5.Parking Brake Won't Hold on a Hill
Cause:Cable stretched,or mechanism not engaging fully.Rear brakes themselves may be weak.
Fix:Tighten the parking brake cable at the lever or caliper end.Ensure the main braking system is in good condition first;the parking brake cannot hold if the service brakes are weak.
